Cuba is facing a severe energy crisis; an Italian container of aid has arrived

The initiative
As reported on the Vatican News website, the initiative has been launched by the association Semi di Pace, which has been running a national campaign across Italia since last March entitled “Cuba in our hearts”. This project has brought together schools, parishes, associations and institutions across Italy and has now resulted in the arrival on the island of a large container laden with humanitarian aid.
Serious energy crisis
Cuba has been experiencing a severe energy crisis since mid-2024, exacerbated by the oil embargo imposed by the United States in January, which has led to record-breaking power cuts. In recent weeks, blackouts have reached unprecedented levels, with simultaneous power cuts affecting between 70 per cent and 72 per cent of the country during peak demand periods. This situation has also reignited public protests against the ruling Castro regime.
Bondi: a moment of comfort amidst so much suffering
For the association’s president, Luca Bondi, the initiative will be a comfort to the Cuban people amidst so much suffering. “These are not just useful supplies for hospitals, schools, and centres for the elderly and disabled,” he said, “but above all a demonstration of our solidarity with a kind and peaceful people.” In short, it is aid that Bondi also describes as a necessary act of brotherhood and reciprocity, recalling the recent past, marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, when over 50 healthcare workers arrived from Cuba to support Italian hospitals.
