This morning, a cyber attack hit the websites of the Malpensa and Milan-Linate airports, as well as the portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Farnesina). The pages are currently unreachable by users, and any attempt to access them returns the message: 'The page is not working'. Claiming the action on Telegram was the pro-Russian hacker collective NoName057(16), known for similar attacks in other Western countries.
In the message posted on its chat, the group stated: 'Italian Russophobes receive a well-deserved cyber-response'. The hackers also claimed other attacks in Italy, involving the sites of Siena Mobilità, GTT (Gruppo Trasporti Torino) and Federtrasporto.
No consequences for flights
.Despite the impact on the airports' websites, no repercussions were reported on the operation of flights at Malpensa and Linate: airport authorities explained that the operation of Malpensa and Linate airports 'has always been regular and still is'. However, the inconveniences affected users trying to consult information on arrivals and departures.
The attack appears to have been carried out using DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) techniques, by massively sending requests for access to servers to the point where computer systems were disrupted.
Investigations and CNAIPIC intervention
The National Cybercrime Centre for the Protection of Critical Infrastructure (CNAIPIC) of the Postal Police has started investigations to identify those responsible and support the restoration of affected systems. Specialists are working in cooperation with the site operators to mitigate the damage and restore services to normal.
