Diesel prices hit record highs: the 2.2-euro-per-litre mark has been breached – here are the most expensive regions
For the time being, only the province of Bolzano has crossed the psychological threshold of 2.2 euros, with diesel priced at 2.202 euros; Sicily and Friuli-Venezia Giulia are just a stone’s throw away, both at 2.190
It was only a matter of time. Diesel has exceeded 2.2 euros per litre in the province of Bolzano, the first region to breach this threshold, whilst the national average at self-service stations has already slipped above the levels that, back in March 2022, had forced the Draghi government to cut excise duties.
The excise duty discount
The same measure that the current government implemented from 18 March to 3 July, but which now seems difficult to repeat, partly because the measure – not being targeted at the most vulnerable – is viewed unfavourably by European institutions and global organisations such as the International Monetary Fund.
Prices
Today, the Ministry of Enterprise reported a national average price of 2.161 euros per litre for diesel and 1.968 euros for petrol. On the one hand, this means that the average price of diesel has exceeded the level recorded on 14 March 2022 (€2.154) amid the war in Ukraine; on the other hand, it means that the price of petrol has reached its highest level since the escalation in Iran began (the all-time record remains, for the time being, at the 2022 figure).
The most expensive and cheapest regions
For the time being, only the province of Bolzano is above the psychological threshold of 2.2 euros, where diesel costs 2.202 euros; Sicily and Friuli-Venezia Giulia are just behind, both at 2.190. At the other end of the scale, the Marche remains the cheapest region, at €2.139 per litre: 6.3 cents less than in Bolzano.
