Driving licence and health card on mobile phone available to all: here's how

After an experimental period launched in October on a sample of 50,000 citizens, from today all users who have downloaded the IO app will be able to add digital versions of their driving licence, health insurance card-European Health Insurance Card and European disability card to their wallet. This is the penultimate step towards the realisation of the It Wallet system, the Italian digital wallet that will be fully operational in 2025.
The time schedule
.The digital wallet was released in stages: from 23 October, as mentioned, for the first 50,000 citizens, from 6 November to 250,000 citizens, from 30 November to 1 million, and from 4 December for all Italians. Digital identity is in fact a tool that, on the recommendation of the EU Commission, other governments are also working on, and the ultimate goal is to have a European wallet (Eudi Wallet, European digital identity wallet). There will also be wallets issued by private entities (those of Apple and Google are already known), but what must be avoided is that each one is limited to its own services.
How to activate digital documents
.As of today, the IO app feature that allows users to add a digital version of their personal documents to their app wallet is available to all users. Activation requires a new authentication in the app with Spid or Cie to ensure that the documents are with certainty associated with the user's identity.
Physical cards
.Digital versions of documents are authentic copies of physical documents within a legally compliant digital application. However, the physical cards are not going to be retired: the It Wallet is not mandatory and for now the three digital documents can only be used for offline interactions: the driving licence can only be used in Italy to prove that one is qualified to drive in the event of police checks; the health card - European Health Insurance Card will allow access to services provided by the National Health Service; the European Disability Card will have the same uses as the physical document version.
