A strong earthquake tremor, magnitude 5.1, was felt at 05:53 in Reggio Calabria, with numerous reports also coming from Messina and other areas of Sicily and Calabria. No reports of damage after the 5.1 magnitude earthquake recorded more than 20 kilometres off the Ionian coast of Calabria. This was told to ANSA by the head of the Calabria Region's Civil Protection department, Domenico Costarella, who is following the checks from the operations room in Catanzaro. "Despite the fact that the quake was at sea, and this certainly helped," Costarella said, "I have ordered checks in the nearest areas and there are no reports of damage. I have also heard from the commissioner of the Reggio Calabria Hospital and there are no reports for the Melito Porto Salvo hospital either'.
