The former mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro has been remanded for trial for allegedly violating the law on electoral expenses in connection with the 2020 local government campaign. The trial has been set for 21 September.
Along with Brugnaro, Brugnaro's chief of staff, Morris Ceron, Walter Bianchi, of the Northeast Production and Development Consortium, and Adriano Giugie, the electoral expenses commissioner, have also been indicted on various counts of forgery and illegal financing. At the centre of the investigation is an alleged 'overrun' of the electoral expenditure ceiling of around EUR 300,000.
