Electricity consumption rises again in September (+1.2%)
Terna's report: after the contraction in August and July, demand is growing. 40% of demand is covered by renewables, with solar (+30%) now surpassing hydroelectric
Electricity consumption in Italy rose again in September after the contraction in July and August: +1.2% compared to the same month of 2024 (+0.4% adjusted for calendar and temperature effects), according to Terna's latest data, which certify a national demand for the month of 26 billion kWh, while overall demand in the first nine months of the year fell by 1.2% compared to the same period of 2024 (-0.7% adjusted).
Industrial consumption was on the rise: the Imcei index (Monthly Index of Industrial Electricity Consumption) prepared by Terna, which examines demand from so-called energy-intensive companies, recorded growth of 2.9% (+2.6% corrected for calendar effects) compared to September 2024. In particular, the steel, lime and gypsum cement, mechanical engineering, ceramics and glass, and food sectors were positive, while the paper, non-ferrous metals and chemical sectors were negative.
In cyclical terms, thus compared to the previous month, the change in seasonally and temperature adjusted electricity demand was up by 2.8%. The Imcei index also showed a positive sign (+0.8%).
National Production
In September, 85.3% of Italy's electricity demand was met by domestic production and the remainder (14.7%) by the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. The value of the monthly foreign balance was 3.8 TWh: 5.7% more than in September 2024. On a cumulative level, from January to September 2025, net imports were down by 8.9% compared to the first nine months of 2024.
The weight of renewables
