ESMA: Comporti, the Consob commissioner with extensive European experience
Nominated as chairman. A native of Siena, born in 1966, he is an expert in legislative and regulatory processes
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Carlo Comporti, the Consob commissioner and expert in regulatory processes at European level, is set to take the helm of ESMA, the European Securities and Markets Authority. A commissioner at the Italian authority since February 2022, Comporti, who was born in Siena 60 years ago, graduated with a degree in Economics and Banking from his hometown university in 1991 and began his career at Consob as an official in 1994.
European experiences
In 2001, he was seconded to the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, and in 2002 to the European Commission in Brussels. From 2003 to 2010, he worked at the Committee of European Securities Regulators (CESR, the forerunner of ESMA) in Paris, serving as Secretary-General and, prior to that, as Deputy Secretary-General.
Roles in the private sector
Comporti has also held positions in the private sector. In particular, he was managing director of Promontory Italia and chief operating officer of Promontory Europe (a business unit of IBM Consulting). In 2011, he served as Acting Secretary-General and Senior Adviser to the Chair of ESMA. His CV also includes experience as a university lecturer: from 1999 to 2007, he was a visiting lecturer on the annual commercial law course at the Faculty of Economics, University of Siena.
Giorgetti: ‘Today’s vote is a tribute to Italia’
“Although the process is not yet complete, today’s decisive vote is a recognition of the individual and of Italia,” said Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, referring to the vote in the European Council on the presidency of the body, and adding that ‘ESMA plays a strategic role and is set to develop into a European Consob in the future. “I am pleased with today’s result, which is the fruit of the working method we have adopted since the start of this parliamentary term and confirms our country’s and the government’s restored credibility in Europe.”
At a meeting of the ambassadors of the 27 Member States, the EU Council has selected Comporti as its candidate for the chairmanship of ESMA. The selection of the senior Italian official prevailed over the Danish candidate, Karen Dortea Abelskov, but does not constitute definitive approval of the appointment. It must be confirmed by the European Parliament.
