Shortly before the decisive EU summit scheduled for this week (27 and 28 June), the heads of state and government of the main European party families agreed to nominate Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as President of the EU Commission. This was reported by Politico and several German media, citing negotiating circles. The agreement also provides for Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas to receive the post of EU High Representative for Foreign Policy. Former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa will be elected president of the body of heads of state and government for an initial period of two and a half years.
Von der Leyen will negotiate directly with Meloni
Ursula von der Leyen will negotiate directly with Giorgia Meloni for the future EU majority, not as leader of the EU Conservatives but as Italian prime minister, to decide which portfolio will be reserved for Italy in the next European Commission. This is what various international media report after the agreement emerged on the EU top jobs between the Populars, Socialists and Liberals. According to Faz, the EPP negotiators are expected to have talks with Meloni this afternoon to inform her.
Bloomberg: "Meloni guaranteed EU vice-presidency"
."Italy will be offered a high-level role in the next European Commission" in return for supporting the agreement reached between Popular, Socialists and Liberals on the new EU leadership. Bloomberg reports this, citing European sources. The leaders of the three political families have agreed 'to support a candidate chosen by Italy for the role of executive vice-president in the next European Commission,' the agency reports.
Fitto: not just appointments, crucial is the EU agenda
"That of the appointments is not the only relevant issue on the European Council agenda: for us it is very important that a clear message comes out of the summit on issues that are crucial for us such as the competitiveness of the European economy, defence, migration and the strategic agenda in addition, of course, to foreign policy issues such as Ukraine and the Middle East on which much progress has been made thanks to the recent G7 summit chaired by President Meloni". Thus the Minister for European Affairs, the South, Cohesion Policies and the Pnrr, Raffaele Fitto, in a note at the end of the General Affairs Council.
