EU announces halt to fertiliser tariffs: coming soon
The EU Commission will 'temporarily suspend the remaining tariffs on ammonia, urea and, where necessary, certain other fertilisers'. This was announced by a spokesman, stating that 'the intention' is to make the measure operational 'as quickly as possible, in 2026'.
Brussels will accompany the tariffs cut with guidelines on the Cbam - the EU mechanism that imposes a cost on the CO2 emissions of imported products - with the possibility of suspending it on fertilisers - also retroactively from 1 January 2026 - if the impact on the market proves to be excessive.
Mercosur's requests from Italy are met.
For the Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, this is "an achievement by Italy, a concrete measure to support the competitiveness of companies and the strength of the Italian and European agricultural system". The suspension of EU tariffs on fertilisers "is good news and is in line with the Italian requests for the suspension of the effects of the Cbam and the sterilisation, even retroactively, of the increase in costs that agricultural enterprises would have had to bear with the entry into force of the regulation. We are always on the side of our companies, a fundamental pillar of our food sovereignty,' Lollobrigida concludes
