European elections. United in Italy but divided in Europe: the map of alliances between Rome and Brussels

Elezioni europee, perché vincere in Italia non basta a vincere in Europa

Allied in Italy, but each on his own in theEuropean Parliament. Or divided in Italy but allied in Europe. The geography of the Italian parties is the most complicated possible once they land in Strasbourg, as the European elections on 8-9 June will confirm. In the government together with Rome, Fdi, Lega and Fi each have their own European house (often also in conflict with each other). The same applies in the centre-left, where divisions between parties are overlaid by divisions in the European parliament.

Division between right and popular

.

In Brussels, Forza Italia is part of the European People's Party (People's Party) family together with Germany's Cdu, the largest national party of the EPP and thus also the natural leader. It is likely that even after these European elections the EPP will be the leading group in Strasbourg. But if the Cdu does not want to know about making alliances with the right (at home it has closed the doors to Afd), Forza Italia i is instead in government with the Lega and with the Fratelli d'Italia . The League is in Europe in the Identity and Democracy group (of which it is the largest component in the legislature that is coming to a close), together with the French right-wing Rassemblement national of Marine Le Pen. On the other hand, the Germans of Afd have left the group, after the controversy over phrases about the SS and relations with Russia.

The role of Fdi and Meloni

Despite the break with Afd, a rapprochement between the EPP and Id seems difficult, also because of Marine Le Pen's presence in Id, which is instead seen as smoke and mirrors by the French president Emmanuel Macron. Macron's party is part of the liberal democrats of Renew Europe (the group also of Carlo Calenda's Azione and Matteo Renzi's Italia Viva), which together with the EPP and the Socialists held the majority in the European Parliament. Instead, she moved closer to Marine Le Pen Giorgia Meloni . Meloni and Fratelli d'Italia are set to play a leading role within their European group, the Conservatives and Reformists (of which the British Conservatives were also members before Brexit). In whose group are also the Spaniards of Vox (who tried unsuccessfully to reach an understanding with the Spanish Populars) and the Poles of the Pis, of former prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

Centre Left in no particular order

.

In the centre-left, the risky alliances are equally complicated. The Democratic Party is firmly within the European Socialist Party, together with the German Spd of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In the Pse there are also the Italian socialists of the Psi, which, however, at the European elections merged into the purpose list ' United States of Europe ', together with Iv and Più Europa (destined the latter two to end up in Renew Europe if they enter Strasbourg). The M5S , on the other hand, is currently in the unattached group (with very little political weight), after having tried, in vain, to join the Greens. As mentioned, the two former allies Carlo Calenda and Matteo Renzi are regaining unity in Europe with the liberal democrat group Renew Europe. Should they enter Strasbourg, however, a split in the Left Green Alliance is likely, with the Greens destined for the group of the same name and the Left heading for the Left in the European Parliament - GUE/NGL
