Former Ilva workers to hold a 24-hour strike on Monday at all sites
The trade unions’ response following a three-hour meeting with the Government. On the table is the decree setting out social safeguards for workers
Strike at all former Ilva sites next Monday. The trade unions have announced this following a meeting with the government at Palazzo Chigi. Acciaierie d’Italia has announced a shutdown of its plants in Taranto, Genoa and Novi Ligure on the same day as the meeting with the trade unions on the company’s future. The government intends to table a decree-law at the next Council of Ministers meeting containing social safeguards for workers and aimed at providing redundancy pay not due to the closure of operations, but with a view to business continuity.
In the meantime, all production activities at the hot-end facilities of the Taranto plant have been suspended. The company is also applying for short-time working schemes. The facilities will be kept in standby mode pending the Supreme Court’s decision.
And so, after three hours, the talks between the government and the trade unions at Palazzo Chigi regarding the former Ilva came to an end. On the agenda was the decree setting out social safeguards for workers, which the government is due to approve at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.
Former Ilva site: Taranto hot zone shut down. Safeguards to be discussed at the next Council of Ministers meeting
A cold shower for the former Ilva. Acciaierie d’Italia has announced a shutdown of its plants in Taranto, Genoa and Novi Ligure on the very same day as the meeting at Palazzo Chigi between the government and the trade unions on the company’s future.
During the round-table discussion, the Under-Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office, Alfredo Mantovano, indicated that the government intends to table a decree-law at the next Council of Ministers meeting, which will include social safeguards for workers and which aims to provide a redundancy fund not in the event of business closures, but with a view to business continuity.
