The Senate chamber unanimously approved the bill to introduce the crime of feminicide. The measure now passes to the House. Immediate comments from politicians. Great satisfaction for the unanimous approval of such an important measure that puts us at the forefront in Europe. Now the hope is that the process in the Chamber will continue in a rapid and shared manner, so that the measure will soon become state law.
Good morning, I hope for the correct and strict application of the new measures
."The bill introducing, among other things, feminicide as a new crime has been unanimously approved. It is a very important intervention because the seriousness of the conduct of those who kill a woman as an act of hatred or discrimination is finally recognised. It is a new and strong stance against those who consider women to be inferior beings. The League has been in the forefront of the battle against violence against women for years and has once again made a vital contribution to this measure. Naturally, I hope that there will be a correct and rigorous application of the new measures,' stresses Lega Senator Giulia Bongiorno, chair of the Senate Justice Committee and rapporteur of the Feminicide Bill.
Semi-employed, gender motive enhanced
"The unanimous approval of the bill on feminicide follows on the heels of important legislative measures to protect women both in terms of prevention and repression of these serious crimes. With the introduction of the independent case of feminicide, the gender motive has been emphasised. Of great importance is the intervention on precautionary measures in a preventive function. A complex measure that also includes compulsory training of magistrates, health professionals and operators. This is yet another confirmation that Italy is in the front line against domestic and gender-based violence,' says the president of the parliamentary enquiry commission on feminicide Martina Semenzato (Noi Moderati).
Roccella, important to name the phenomenon
"The history of Italy has taught us that naming phenomena, describing their characteristics, and equipping ourselves with tools to combat them, is important not only for dealing with individual cases but also because laws are part of the culture of a nation and contribute to shaping it," says Eugenia Roccella, Minister for the Family, Natality and Equal Opportunities. "Today the Senate, after extensive work in the Justice Commission, has written an important page in the fight against violence against women, and I am happy that it has done so unanimously. Typifying the crime of feminicide certainly does not mean using criminal law sociologically or creating a classification of the severity of murders based on the gender of the person killed. It means recognising the specificity of a phenomenon and therefore preventing it and creating the conditions to fight it more effectively, both on the operational and training level and on the cultural level'.
Sample, unanimous OK is a good page in the legislature
'The unanimous approval in the Senate chamber of the bill introducing the crime of feminicide is a good page in the history of this legislature and of Italian politics in general. A measure strongly desired by the Meloni government and which, as a recent survey has confirmed, is among the most awaited regulations by the majority of Italians,' stressed Susanna Donatella Campione, senator of Fratelli d'Italia and rapporteur in the chamber on the feminicide ddl. Campione thanked all her colleagues and in particular 'President Giulia Bongiorno, who has coordinated the work, facilitating the synthesis between the different political sensitivities. I believe that on violence against women politics should not be divided'.
