The new Fiat 500 hybrid (with a 12-volt nil hybrd), derived from the electric model, the one that was supposed to be EV-only, is being pre-series assembled at Mirafiori. The new model, which should give the Turin plant some oxygen, will go on sale between the end of the year and the beginning of 2026, with the same Firefly powertrain, albeit updated, as the 500 Hybrid that was produced in Poland and which has now left the scene. It is a lightweight hybrid with only 12 volts.

The hybrid unit of the new 500 will in fact be the already well-known naturally aspirated three-cylinder produced in Termoli, while the transmission, which is, however, assembled in Mirafiori, will be manual only, since automatic transmission is not currently available for the new 500 hybrid on the way. It should be noted that the Stellantis group's other mild hybrid models are equipped with Puretech-derived 48-volt three-cylinder hybrid engines with automatic or manual transmission.

Fiat 500 mikd hybrid 'Mirafiori'

.

The new 500 hybrid will use a 1,000 cc three-cylinder engine with 70 hp and 92 Nm, 12 volt mild hybrid with a Bsg (belt-driven starter generator) scheme, front-wheel drive coupled to an exclusively manual six-speed gearbox (probably of little interest in the current market scenario): 0-100 will take more or less 14 seconds, while the top speed will be just under 170 km/h. This at least according to unofficial data.

This hybrid evolution of the 500 will be available until at least 2029 and will still be based on the platform of the current electric 500. Fiat's top management stated a few months ago that they estimate a production of around 100,000 cars per year.

Much more important changes to the interior

.

The chassis, like the engine, has been upgraded, while major changes have been made to the car's interior, which have not been fully revealed in the first images of the pre-series versions, since space is to be made for the manual transmission. In addition to this, the hybrid should benefit from all the modifications, both aesthetic and technological, planned for the electric 500 at the time of the facelift, expected at the same time as the hybrid at the end of the year.

List prices are still to be determined

.

As far as list prices are concerned, the new 500 Hybrid could cost a few hundred euros more than the old Polish Hybrid. In this regard, it can be assumed that the car could be offered with a starting threshold that could be set at around 18,500 euro, based above all on the planned additional safety equipment that the outgoing model did not have. Clearly, the whole thing will have to come to terms with possible market developments.

The hybrid will ensure Mirafiori's productivity

.

For Fiat, the new 500 remains one of the best ambassadors of 'Made in Italy', with 70 per cent of production carried out in Turin at the iconic Mirafiori plant. Not to mention that this will guarantee the plant's productivity. Add to that both the unique design and a package of innovations all made in Italy. Will a 12-volt hybrid with manual gearbox be enough to compete with increasingly fierce competition and to continue to maintain the centrality of the 500 as an Italian icon?
