Foibe, Mattarella: wall of oblivion and embarrassment formed. "Dark pages seem to want to repeat themselves".
For the Head of State, 'the abuses and violations are multiplying and call all those who share the values of freedom and coexistence to a new moral and political action against those who threaten freedom, the correct international order and democratic and social achievements'.

"A wall of silence and oblivion - a mixture of embarrassment, political opportunism and sometimes of serious superficiality - formed around the terrible suffering of thousands of Italians, massacred in the foibe or swallowed up in concentration camps, driven en masse to abandon their homes, their possessions, their memories, their hopes, the lands where they had lived, when faced with the threat of imprisonment if not physical elimination". So said President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella during the celebration of the "Day of Remembrance", at the Quirinale.
Dark pages seem to be returning
.In the opinion of the Head of State, 'the abuses and violations are multiplying and call those who share the values of freedom and coexistence to a new action of contrast, both moral and political, against those who threaten freedom, the correct international order and democratic and social achievements. Dark pages of history, also of Europe, seem to want to be replayed'.
Europe united is strength, it must be strengthened not dispersed
"If we cannot change the past, we can help to build a better present and future. Europe, and its model of advanced democracy and development, are looked to by millions of people around the world. The unity of its peoples is its strength and its wealth. Common sense and the lessons of history call for it not to be dispersed but, on the contrary, to be strengthened, in the interests of the European nations and the future of our young people'. These were the words of the President of the Republic on the occasion of the Remembrance Day ceremony.
Complex but firm points
."A long time has passed since those events but they are emotionally close to us: this allows - in a complex historical event still subject to research, historiographical and political debates - to establish some fixed points and outline some perspectives". This was said by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella during the celebration of the 'Giorno del Ricordo' at the Quirinale.
Even communist dictatorships denied freedom
"That territory, steeped in history and civilisation, shared the same tragic fate as many Central and Eastern European countries, which - after the defeat of Nazi-fascism - were denied their aspirations for freedom, democracy and self-determination by the establishment of the communist dictatorship imposed by the Soviet Union. Millions of people in these countries then saw themselves expelled from the land they had inhabited, forced to set out in search of a new homeland'.
