Liguria, former governor Giovanni Toti returns free

The former president of Liguria Region Giovanni Toti is free again. After more than 80 days, the judge for preliminary investigations Paola Faggioni has accepted the request for revocation of his house arrest submitted by lawyer Stefano Savi. Toti can therefore leave his villa in Ameglia (La Spezia) where he has been since 7 May. After the resignation, there would no longer be a danger of reiteration of the crime, according to the judge.

He will resume his life as a free man,' Savi continued, 'and as such he will be able to do everything a free citizen does, including politics. The gip in his motivations explained that 'the reasons for custody have greatly diminished with the closure of the investigation and the resignation'. Now Toti is preparing for the immediate trial requested by the prosecution.

However, 'serious indications of guilt' remain: this is what Judge Paola Faggioni wrote in her order to lift the house arrest for the former president of the Liguria Region. Despite the extreme seriousness of the criminal conduct," the judge continues, "also connected to the particular nature of the functions carried out, taking into account the behaviour of the suspect, who has resigned from his position as President of the Liguria Regional Council, the precautionary requirements can be considered considerably weakened.
