Unbeatable France beat Morocco 2–0 to reach the semi-finals
The quarter-final between France and Morocco was a one-sided affair. Mbappé missed a penalty but then broke the deadlock in the 60th minute. Dembélé doubled the lead six minutes later
In front of over sixty thousand spectators at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, France and Morocco played out an intense and hard-fought quarter-final, albeit one that was never in doubt, given the French side’s dominance as they reached the semi-finals for the third consecutive World Cup.
The French were the favourites going into the match, but Morocco went into the game on the back of an excellent tournament and knowing they were capable of causing problems for any opponent.
The start of the match was characterised by France’s dominance in terms of possession. Didier Deschamps’ side immediately took control of possession and created the first chances through Mbappé and Upamecano, but found a very alert Yassine Bounou standing in their way. The Moroccan goalkeeper made several crucial saves that kept the score at 0–0.
The key moment of the first half came in the 28th minute. Mazraoui fouled Mbappé in the box and the referee awarded France a penalty. Mbappé stepped up to take the spot-kick himself, but Bounou anticipated the shot to his left and saved it, keeping Morocco’s hopes alive.
France continued to press forward and came close to taking the lead through Doué and a spectacular shot from Digne that struck the crossbar in the closing stages of the first half. Despite France’s dominance, the teams went into the break with the score at 0–0.
