1. Frida Kahlo (1907 - 1954) fetched $54.7 million (including royalties) for her painting El Sueño (La cama) - "The Dream (The Bed), which was sold on 20 November at Sotheby's New York. The recent adjudication honours a surrealist work painted in 1940, a crucial year in the life of the Mexican artist who had seen her former lover, Russian revolutionary Leon Trosky, assassinated in August and remarried to her ex-husband Diego Rivera in December.
