Alessandro Di Battista: his condition in Cuba has improved and he is due to return on medical grounds on 5 September

According to information obtained by ANSA, Alessandro Di Battista is expected to leave Cuba tomorrow morning, 5 September, and arrive in Rome tomorrow afternoon. Di Battista is expected to leave Cuba on a private air ambulance, as reported in recent days. He fell ill whilst in Cuba, and two specialists from the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome travelled to the island to consult with him. Upon his return, he is expected to be admitted to the Gemelli.

The time is drawing near for Alessandro Di Battista to return to Italia from Cuba, where the former M5S MP has been hospitalised in a serious condition since Friday evening – first in Santa Clara and then in Havana – following severe headaches.

“I’m feeling better today. It’s been a difficult few days, but at the same time I’m optimistic and always try to see the positive side of everything. I’d like to thank the Cuban doctors who, as the Italian doctors have confirmed to me, were very skilled and prompt in their diagnosis and in choosing the initial treatment. I will be leaving Cuba on 4 September on an air ambulance, the costs of which will be covered by the insurance company with whom I took out a policy before I set off.” Alessandro Di Battista announced this on 3 September on his social media accounts.

All decisions are on hold until the patient is deemed fit to fly. For this type of assessment too, two specialists from the Gemelli Hospital in Rome have flown to Havana; they are working alongside the medical staff at the “Hermanos Ameijeiras” hospital and may travel on the flight that will bring Di Battista back to Rome.

For the past couple of days, the former MP has also been accompanied by, amongst others, Sahra Lahouasnia, the mother of his two children, and Luca Di Giuseppe, president of Schierarsi, the association he founded.
