What you can do in the first phase
.In phase 1, the three aforementioned documents will not be usable in automated interactions with online services or self-service systems (e.g. totems), but can be used with legal validity by citizens in the physical interactions of daily life in place of plastic documents.
A few examples: the digital driving licence can be used for police checks, with the same verification mechanisms as today, to prove possession of a valid driving licence; the health card on the smartphone can be used in place of the physical document to book examinations in the presence of the police, to dispense prescriptions for medicines, and to prove possession of European health insurance in EU countries; the digital version of the European Disability Card can be used in the same cases as today with the presentation of the physical document, subject to the use of an identification document.
The enlargement of the audience
.In the same way as described so far, the three digital documents will become available to other citizens from the beginning of November. The second stage will see the opening to 250,000 citizens from 6 November, then to 1 million citizens from 20 November, and finally to the availability to all from 4 December.
