FS is launching new Intercity services to connect even the most disadvantaged areas
Alstom’s 200 trains are on display at the trade fair in Berlin, as part of a 500 million plan
Trenitalia’s (Ferrovie dello Stato group) new Intercity 200 trains are making their debut at Innotrans, the world’s leading railway trade fair, which opened on Tuesday 22 September 2026 in Berlin. The trains are manufactured entirely at Alstom’s Italian factories and form part of a Trenitalia investment plan worth around 500 million euros, partly funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The presentation was attended by Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO of the FS Group, and senior executives from the Alstom Group.
The Intercity 200 trains can travel at speeds of up to 200 km/h and represent a tangible means of reducing infrastructure disparities between different parts of the country, promoting regional equity and accessibility across the entire national network. PNRR funding has made it possible to launch a transformation that particularly affects central and southern Italy and non-electrified lines – strategic corridors for social cohesion and local development. The new technologies introduced make it possible to provide high-quality services even on routes that have hitherto been less well served by modern trains, ensuring greater comfort, reliability and punctuality.
Trenitalia’s Intercity programme, of which train 200 forms part, involves the purchase of a total of 38 trainsets. Specifically: 13 new hybrid-powered trains (electric, diesel and battery) and 6 battery-powered trains, both manufactured by Hitachi Rail; 7 hybrid trains already in service, manufactured by Alstom; 12 electric trains capable of reaching 200 km/h, manufactured by Alstom.
Thanks to these investments, explains Strisciuglio, Trenitalia has thoroughly modernised its medium- and long-distance services across the whole country, including on less-frequented and non-electrified lines. The aim is to combine technological innovation, accessibility and sustainability, offering passengers more efficient, reliable services with a reduced environmental impact. The new Intercity trains guarantee improved operational performance, lower emissions and greater operational flexibility, even on mixed-traction or non-electrified lines.
On the issue of future tenders for Intercity services in Italia, Strisciuglio says: ‘Trenitalia has invested heavily in this business. We will assess the tender conditions and compete to win all the tenders. We do not set the tender conditions; we are the ones competing. Trenitalia’s aim is to maintain its presence in the Intercity segment.”
