Fuel chaos: lorry drivers’ strike begins in Sicily and Calabria
A lorry drivers’ strike against high fuel prices has begun in Sicily and Calabria, with the walkout set to continue until 20 October
The lorry drivers’ protest against high fuel prices began at midnight in Sicily. The strike, called by the Sicilian Lorry Drivers’ Committee led by Salvatore Bella, will continue until midnight on 20 October. Lorries will remain stationary in their depots and semi-trailers loaded with goods will not be collected from ships in the island’s ports.
The industrial action also involves Calabria, where the protest was called by Fedralog, the regional logistics federation. Around fifteen picket lines have been organised across the region, including at Lamezia Terme Airport, the port of Gioia Tauro and several junctions on the A2 motorway.
The vehicles are positioned at the sides of the roads without actually blocking them, but traffic disruption is still being reported due to the narrowing of the carriageways. The lorry drivers’ protest comes on top of that of the farmers, which has already been going on for days in Calabria.
A protest has also been reported at the Nola junction, in the province of Naples, along the A30 Caserta–Salerno motorway. The report, carried by motorway traffic information services, concerns both the entrance and the exit of the junction, at kilometre 18.9.
