German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his respect for Israel's attack on Iran, seeing it as a service to its Western allies. "This is the dirty work Israel is doing for all of us," Merz said in an interview with Zdf on the sidelines of the G7 in Canada, stressing that Germany is also affected by the regime in Tehran. Tehran's leadership "has brought death and destruction to the world with attacks, murders and massacres, with Hezbollah and Hamas," said the chancellor, according to whom the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 "would never have been possible without the regime in Tehran". "All I can say is that I have the utmost respect for the fact that the Israeli army and government had the courage to do this," Merz continued, pointing out that "otherwise we could have witnessed the terror of this regime for months and years, and then perhaps with a nuclear weapon in hand."

"If Iran does not back down, the complete destruction of Iran's nuclear programme is on the agenda, something Israel cannot achieve alone," Merz continued, speaking on the sidelines of the G7. According to the chancellor, "Israel's attacks have weakened Iran, we do not expect the rulers in Tehran to return to their former strength".

Europe, however, is ready to resume talks on the Iranian nuclear issue as before Israel's attack, Merz assured. "Should a new situation arise, Germany, France and Britain would again be ready to provide diplomatic assistance, as they were until last Thursday," the German Chancellor pointed out.

Caos Trump at G7, leaves early and lashes out at Macron

"Everyone should evacuate Tehran immediately!" This was declared by US President Donald Trump who surprisingly left the G7 in Canada ahead of schedule and convened the US Security Council in the Situation Room at the White House. The final document of the summit of the Big Seven countries, including the US of 'The Donald', states that 'Iran can never have a nuclear weapon' and that 'Israel has the right to defend itself'. and urges de-escalation in the conflict between Israel and Iran.

"If it's for the truce, fine," Emanuel Macron's comment on Trump's return home. But the White House number one attacks him. "The French president, to get publicity, mistakenly said that I left the G7 summit in Canada to work on a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. False!'," Trump writes on X. "He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a ceasefire. It's much bigger than that."

The US leader then displaces his allies by denouncing as a "big mistake" the expulsion of Vladimir Putin from what had become the G8 at the time, after having endorsed the day before a mediation role of the tsar in the Middle East conflict, immediately rejected by Macron and the other bigwigs.

Trump persuades himself to sign

.

In short, the Canadian G7 had a new surprise in store, after Trump's early departure who still found time to meet Giorgia Meloni. The leaders, adjusting the language of the draft, managed to convince the US president to sign a 'statement on recent developments between Israel and Iran', after his initial refusal. In the preamble, the seven reaffirmed their 'commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East' and affirmed in this context that 'Israel has the right to defend itself', confirming their 'support for Israel's security' but affirming 'also the importance of the protection of civilians'. They then pointed the finger at Tehran accusing it of being "the main source of instability and terror in the region" and recalling that they have always "clearly stated that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon".

The final version of the document

.

Then the key passage, after the initial wording had been changed to only call for de-escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran: 'We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis lead to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza'. Finally, the assurance that 'we will remain vigilant to the implications for international energy markets and ready to coordinate, including with like-minded partners, to protect market stability'. A first success for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, host of the G7, and the coordination of the allies, who have woven a patient diplomatic web, saving the group's unity for now.

Convened situation room

Trump in any case will not attend the second day of the G7. 'The Donald', in fact, returns to Washington without attending the second day of the summit, to 'deal with very important issues'. The tycoon has ordered his national security staff to meet in the Situation Room, while at the same time ordering members of his team to attempt a meeting as soon as possible with officials in Tehran, to see if Iran really wants a diplomatic solution.

Skipped the bilateral with the Ukrainian president Volodimir Zelensky, expected in the coming hours in Canada to attend the summit. This news should be read in conjunction with the numerous statements in recent hours with which the American president has in fact relaunched Putin's international rehabilitation. At the family photo, on the grass of the Kananaskis Country Golf Course, there were few smiles and many questions for Trump.
