Gaza, Italy in the field for reconstruction with Carabinieri and companies
Meloni weaves the web, strong on special relationship with Trump. Tajani: 'Our companies prepared to work post-disaster'
Key points
A place on the board
The government's first objective is a place for Italy on the Board of Peace, which will be chaired by Trump himself and will also include former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, with whom Meloni has revealed that she has spoken on several occasions. The body will be called upon to govern the Strip and manage funding for the redevelopment of Gaza until the Palestinian National Authority has completed the reform process and can regain control. The Prime Minister may have the opportunity to discuss the matter with Trump in person next week in Washington, if the tycoon confirms his participation on 18 October at the gala dinner of the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The training of Palestinian forces
But Italy is also aiming to be part of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) that will have to guarantee security and training of Palestinian soldiers. In this case, the Executive's hope is the launching of a peace mission under the UN aegis: it would make the parliamentary steps to authorise the sending of Italian soldiers easier. Which are already ready: up to 250 Carabinieri (one thousand at full strength, considering the shifts), like those who have already been engaged in working side by side with the Palestinian police recalled in 2023 and then in small part returned to Rafah and Jericho, always with training tasks.
The Eubam mission in Rafah is restarted
Just today, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto announced the resumption of Italian activities in the Eubam mission (European Union Border Assistance Mission) for the reopening of the Rafah crossing point: on 14 October, it will be opened alternately in two directions outwards towards Egypt and inwards towards Gaza. In January, the first seven Carabinieri were sent for six months, replaced in July.
The deminers hypothesis
The other contribution of our military, which will also be assessed in the event of a ceasefire in Ukraine, is that of mine clearance operations. A 'humanitarian' field in which, as the deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, has repeatedly emphasised, Italy excels. Both in the public and private sectors.
