Generative bionics: the Italian humanoid robot Gene.01 is ready
The prototype developed by the Genoa-based company will be unveiled at the AMD Advancing AI event in San Francisco on 22 and 23 July
Generative Bionics, an Italian company that develops humanoid robots for industrial applications (formerly a spin-off of the IIT), has, six months after presenting the project, developed the Gene.01 robot – a sensor-equipped humanoid platform with tactile skin, designed to operate safely alongside people.
Announced – though still at the design stage – at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas in early January 2026, the Gene.01 prototype was completed within six months. And Generative Bionics, the company led by Daniele Pucci, is already adapting the platform for its first industrial application, through a partnership with Fincantieri focused on welding operations in shipyards. In effect, the robot’s hands will be replaced by welders.
According to a press release, the company “is also making the robot’s digital model available as open source, offering physical AI developers a foundation from which to create industry-specific applications. Gene.01 will make its debut in the United States, in San Francisco, at the AMD Advancing AI 2026 event, scheduled for 22 and 23 July.
“Gene.01,” Pucci emphasises, “is a robot designed as a scalable and customisable platform across three levels: AI, design, and the robot’s extremities – namely its hands and feet. In this way, our products meet the specific needs of each customer. It is the first manifestation of our belief that physical AI must be, from the outset, human-aware and industry-oriented. In just six months, our team has progressed from the concept stage to a fully functional, sensor-equipped humanoid platform, combining in-depth expertise in humanoid robotics, industrialisation processes, artificial intelligence and design. Our aim is to enhance people’s capabilities through robots capable of perceiving, sensing and learning from the physical world, adapting to the specific industrial tasks required by each customer.”
Generative Bionics is based in Genoa and, as can be seen, aims to bring intelligent, ‘Made in Italy’ humanoid robots to market, designed with a particular focus on aesthetics and integration with people. The company raised €70 million in a seed round (in December 2025) led by CDP Venture Capital, with participation from AMD Ventures, Duferco, Eni Next, Roboit and Tether, to support the development of the new generation of human-centred physical AI for industrial applications.
