The revolutionary impact of artificial intelligence has found one of its most fertile grounds in translation services, making not only textual, but also voice translations more accurate. At the centre of this transformation is Google Translate, one of the world's most widely used services for overcoming language barriers. The massive introduction of Gemini, Google's proprietary AI, throughout the company's ecosystem could therefore not exclude this strategic service.

And the revolution has arrived - currently in the rollout phase - with a two-pronged strategy that promises to radically change our approach to multilingual communication: on the one hand, the ever-deepening integration of Gemini's AI, and on the other, the ambition to challenge language-learning giants such as Duolingo on their own ground

Gemini arrives

Last July, Google Translate introduced 110 new languages, the biggest expansion ever, bringing the total to 243 and making the service accessible to over 614 million more people. It was the first step in a clear strategy of digital inclusivity, which is now enriched with an important new feature: a selector that allows users to choose between two modes, the quick mode and the advanced mode, enhanced by Gemini's AI. No longer a single, standard translation, but a service capable of adapting to the context and needs of the user.

The difference is substantial: while the 'fast' mode maintains the usual speed, the 'advanced' mode promises contextualised translations that take into account nuance, style and implied meanings. It is the difference between having a talking dictionary and a professional interpreter in your smartphone. In parallel, Google has also updated its instant translation functionality. Thanks to Gemini, it is now possible to hold a conversation in over 70 languages with simultaneous voice and text translations. Two people can literally speak to each other in their native language, with AI acting as a bridge in real time.

The challenge to Duolingo: when Translate teaches

The boldest move is undoubtedly the introduction of an Exercise button, currently in beta release, which generates customised language lessons. Users can indicate their skill level and the objective for which they wish to learn a language and Gemini AI generates customised scenarios and exercises. Those studying Spanish for work will have different exercises from those preparing for a holiday in Barcelona. It's an approach that transforms Google Translate from a passive tool to an active tutor, harnessing the huge database of translations to create customised learning paths.
