GPT-5 arrives, here's how Microsoft brings new AI to its platforms

Yesterday, OpenAI launched GPT-5, and the announcement marks a new chapter (yet another, one might say) in the now endless narrative that is elevating generative artificial intelligence to the tech 'fad' of the moment. The leap forward from the debut of ChatGPT, which marked a sort of watershed between the AI we thought of before its advent and the one we are learning to understand (agents included) from then on, is significant and Sam Altman himself called it 'an important step' towards AGI, General Artificial Intelligence). The introduction of GPT-5 has also seen Microsoft, which is OpenAI's privileged partner and funder, move: the new model is already available on the Redmond company's main platforms, specifically Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot, Visual Studio Code and Azure AI Foundry.

In a post on its official blog, the company gave ample prominence to this important update, first of all pointing out how all classes of users, from simple consumers to corporate employees via developers, will in fact benefit from the advanced reasoning capabilities of GPT-5 (not by chance trained in the Azure cloud) within its application tools. The benefits? Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot, for instance, promise to be more effective in interpreting and dealing with complex questions, to keep the thread of even the most articulate conversational interactions, and to understand the user's context more fully, without the user - thanks to a real-time routing system - having to worry about which model is best suited to accomplish the task. The effect should be seen immediately in terms of increased productivity, resulting from the possibility of analysing e-mails, documents and files with the more advanced OpenAI models. The benefits for those who make their living from programming and developing agents using GitHub Copilot and Visual Studio Code are just as explicit, and relate to the ability to complete longer and more complex coding tasks and to perform extended agent tasks from start to finish. Finally, an additional plus Microsoft is announcing for developers is access to the new GPT-5 models in Azure AI Foundry, and thus through the enterprise-grade AI security, compliance and privacy requirements of the Azure cloud platform.
