Hamas dissolves Gaza’s governing body. Israel: this is not the solution
Israeli attacks on Gaza since the ‘ceasefire’ came into force in October last year have left at least 1,072 people dead and 3,463 injured
The Hamas government in the Gaza Strip has announced the resignation of the so-called “Emergency Committee”, the administration led by the movement governing the Palestinian enclave, stating that it had completed all the necessary administrative procedures for the transfer of powers to the National Technocratic Committee for the Administration of Gaza. This was reported by The Times of Israel. Hamas stated in a press release that “all civil servants will continue to provide services to the population” and declared themselves “ready to operate under the authority of the new body”. The decision is primarily symbolic and appears aimed at demonstrating the movement’s willingness to hand over administrative control of the Strip to the national committee, in line with the 20-point plan for Gaza promoted by US President Donald Trump.
Israel: Dissolving the Hamas government is not the solution
Hamas’s decision to dissolve its government in Gaza and replace it with a committee of technocrats “is not a path towards a solution, because what Hamas is trying to do is copy Hezbollah’s model – that is, to make life easier for itself”, said George Deek, Director of the Department for Southern Europe and Israel’s Special Envoy to the Christian world, during a briefing with a delegation of Italian journalists at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.
“This is not a path to a solution, because what Hamas is trying to do is copy Hezbollah’s model – that is, make life easier for itself. It is not contrary to their wishes; it is exactly what they want. Why should they have to deal with the sewers and reconstruction, paying salaries, assisting the civilian population and collecting taxes?”, said Deek, responding to a question from askanews, arguing that their main objective is military.
“This solution will serve no purpose other than to strengthen Hamas, because it will have less money to allocate to civilian needs, for the benefit of the people of Gaza, and more money to invest in terrorist infrastructure,” the Israeli official continued.
“That is why the only path to reconstruction and to creating a better future for the people of Gaza lies in the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarisation of the Gaza Strip. If these conditions are met, then we can move forward,” Deek explained, noting that this position is also shared by the BBoard of Peace and its US ally.
