According to estimates by Fipe Cofcommercio, Italians will spend 9.3 billion euros on eating and drinking out in August.

In what is traditionally the summer holiday month for Italians, according to the Federaizone dei pubblici esercizi, there is a change in lifestyles and eating behaviour.
"Even for those who will not be going on holiday, two out of three Italians, August is the period in which to indulge in some distraction and consume a meal outside the home more often: from aperitifs to dinner at a pizzeria or restaurant, passing through breakfast at the bar," writes the Fipe Study Centre in a note according to which the expenditure of Italians for consumption outside the home in August 2025 will reach 9.3 billion euros.

Among the preferred places of consumption, b>bars and restaurants will be the main choices, spending around EUR 1.8 billion and EUR 5.4 billion respectively, a figure that rises to EUR 6 billion if fast food is included. In addition, takeaways and street food will absorb some EUR 900 million, while ice cream parlours and discos will share EUR 100 million each. In addition, August is also the month of festivals and fairs, events for which Italians will spend EUR 500 million.

The main expenditure items for Italian consumers will concern dinner, with an expenditure of 4.9 billion euros, followed by lunch, which will account for 2.4 billion euros, values that take into account all consumption, including that made in places other than restaurants. Aperitifs will absorb EUR 600 million, an identical amount will be allocated to breakfast at the bar, while mid-day breaks and after dinner will see expenditure of around EUR 400 million each'.

"Discovering that bars and restaurants," says Lino Enrico Stoppani, president of Fipe-Confcommercio, "represent an important item of expenditure for Italians' summer consumption is not a surprise, but a confirmation that these businesses are an integral part of people's lifestyles, both in the places where they holiday and live. Our businesses, thanks to the commitment and professionalism of thousands of workers, accompany the daily life of Italians, fostering conviviality and sharing on which to also strengthen human relationships and make the country even more attractive and hospitable".
