What are the innovations that new drivers must comply with? The approval of the new law on road safety amending the Highway Code, in force since 14 December, introduces a number of novelties for newly licensed drivers. We talk about this with Antonella Fiorino, Chief Commissioner of the State Police.
There are new power limits for cars that new drivers can drive. What are they and for how many years does this ban last?
The regulations for novice licence holders were remodelled with the recent amendments to the Highway Code, taking into account on the one hand the protection of road safety, but also the possibility of allowing the novice licence holder to use the vehicle already in use in the family. It is precisely for these reasons that the period of validity of the restrictions on driving powerful vehicles by new B licence holders has been extended from one to three years, who may drive vehicles with a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 75 kW per tonne. And this is already the first change, as the previous limit was set at 55 kW per tonne. In addition, the maximum power limit for cars that can be driven by newly licensed drivers has been raised from 70 to 105 kW, and this limit also applies to electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
To which novice drivers do the new rules apply?
The new requirements apply to those who obtain a driving licence on or after 14 December this year.
