What do people risk if they are caught exceeding the speed limit? With the approval of the new law on road safety amending the Highway Code, a number of innovations came into force on 14 December, including those concerning speeding. In particular, penalties are increased if the violation is committed in built-up areas. And there are also accessory sanctions, such as the brief suspension of the licence, which are added to the administrative sanctions. We talk about this with Antonella Fiorino, Chief Commissioner of the State Police.
In the case of speeding, therefore, administrative penalties increase and in some cases there are also accessory penalties. Let's go step by step: what do you risk if you exceed the limit by more than 10 kilometres, but within 40?
For those who exceed the maximum speed limit by 10 kilometres per hour and no more than 40 kilometres per hour, there is an administrative fine ranging from 173 to 694 euros.
What happens if the offence is committed within a built-up area and at least twice in a year?
In order to ensure greater prevention of road accidents in urban areas, where most road accidents occur, the recent amendments to the Highway Code introduced an increase in penalties from 220 to 880 euros in the event of a repeat offence for speeding between 10 kilometres per hour and 40 kilometres per hour above the prescribed limit, committed in built-up areas within a year. This violation also results in the suspension of the driving licence from 15 days to 30 days.
