What do people risk if they are caught exceeding the speed limit? With the approval of the new law on road safety amending the Highway Code, a number of innovations came into force on 14 December, including those concerning speeding. In particular, penalties are increased if the violation is committed in built-up areas. And there are also accessory sanctions, such as the brief suspension of the licence, which are added to the administrative sanctions. We talk about this with Antonella Fiorino, Chief Commissioner of the State Police.

In the case of speeding, therefore, administrative penalties increase and in some cases there are also accessory penalties. Let's go step by step: what do you risk if you exceed the limit by more than 10 kilometres, but within 40?

For those who exceed the maximum speed limit by 10 kilometres per hour and no more than 40 kilometres per hour, there is an administrative fine ranging from 173 to 694 euros.

What happens if the offence is committed within a built-up area and at least twice in a year?

In order to ensure greater prevention of road accidents in urban areas, where most road accidents occur, the recent amendments to the Highway Code introduced an increase in penalties from 220 to 880 euros in the event of a repeat offence for speeding between 10 kilometres per hour and 40 kilometres per hour above the prescribed limit, committed in built-up areas within a year. This violation also results in the suspension of the driving licence from 15 days to 30 days.

Let's recap: what are the penalties if speeding is between 40 and 60 kilometres per hour?

For speeding between 40 and 60 kilometres per hour, an administrative fine of between €543 and €2,170 will be imposed, in addition to an accessory sanction of one month to three months' driving licence suspension.

Instead, for speeds above 60 kilometres per hour?

In this case, a sanction of the payment of a sum of money, the amount of which varies from EUR 845 to EUR 3,382, as well as the suspension of the driving licence from six months to twelve months, will be imposed.

New in the Code is a change in penalties for remote sensing in the case of multiple speeding offences committed within one hour. What does this change for speed camera fines?

The changes in the area of speed limits introduce the benefit of unification, which allows several speed limit violations to be extinguished with the application of the penalties provided for the most serious violation ascertained, increased by one third. For this benefit to be enjoyed, however, several conditions must coexist. First of all, the offences must be committed within a time span of one hour, with the same vehicle and on a stretch of road under the jurisdiction of the same owner or manager.
