The commissioner for social housing is set to take up his post. It will be Felice Squitieri, an architect, commissioner for Via and Vas at the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, and a close associate of the Lega, for whom he has held various posts, mainly in Rome and the Lazio region.
Acceleration on the first pillar
The appointment, provided for by a Prime Ministerial Decree, comes to give an immediate boost to the first pillar of the Plan, the one dedicated to public housing, just as the law converting Decree 66/2026 is about to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies. His term of office will last until the end of 2027. Among his other tasks will be to launch a special procedure to identify properties owned by the State, the Regions, local authorities, public bodies and unlisted publicly-owned companies, to be allocated to social housing projects.
60,000 homes to be refurbished in 12 months
He will be assigned a support team comprising three units. He will also be able to draw on the support of two organisations: Milano Cortina and Invitalia. He will be based at the Ministry of Infrastructure. And it is precisely the MIT which, with this appointment, is launching the part of the Housing Plan most closely overseen by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini. The aim, as announced when the measure was launched, is to regenerate 60,000 social housing units, making them fit for habitation within a year.
