2.28 million was spent to build two new operating theatres with their support services: 17 anaesthetists and 27 nurses will be hired to run them
Key points
The new operating block of the IFO Regina Elena and San Gallicano has been inaugurated, enlarged by 600 square metres with an investment of EUR 2.28 million and the activation of two new operating theatres and related support services. Alongside the expansion of the space to 3,000 square metres and the technological enhancement, 17 anaesthetists and 27 nurses are to be hired on a permanent basis.
For Livio De Angelis, IFO General Manager, "the expansion will allow us to increase our surgical activities with a significant advantage in terms of quality of care and reduction of waiting times for cancer surgery
More than 7,300 surgeries in 2025
The Operating Block makes use of three multi-port robotic systems and one single-port (SP) system, among the most recent acquisitions. To support minimally invasive surgery, seven 3D/4K laparoscopic columns, advanced tissue processing instruments and fluorescence-guided surgery applications are available, with benefits in terms of precision and post-operative recovery.
In the last year, 7,377 surgical procedures were performed at the IFO, between ordinary and day surgery, referring to the Regina Elena and San Gallicano Institutes in total. In 2025, 1,468 multi-port and single-port robotic surgeries were performed, with an overall growth of about 55% in the last five years.
Total investment of 101 million
For the president of the Lazio Region, Francesco Rocca, present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, "it was a duty to prevent the IFO from losing its role and strength. With 101 million euro of total investment between the Pnrr and health building - he added - we have strengthened, as never before, this structure. For those who face an oncological disease and for the families involved in this difficult journey, we can say, with pride, that we guarantee some of the best care at national level''.
