In Llanganates Park, amongst blue lagoons, fincas and amphibians

Among the best-preserved and most effectively protected reserves – thanks to the tireless and determined efforts of the EcoMinga Foundation – the Río Machay reserve serves as a wildlife sanctuary for species most at risk from extinction and deforestation. Staying at Finca Palmonte – a former farm returned to nature, converted into an eco-lodge and run by Alexander and Arlett – you can take part in nature expeditions in the area stretching from Cerro Candelaria, Llanganates National Park and Sangay National Park, home to the Andean tapir and the Andean eagle, where the Magnolia vargasiana flourishes alongside numerous varieties of Teagueia orchids. Amphibian enthusiasts and experts will be delighted by the opportunity to spot species such as the Hyloscirtus sethmacfarlanei frog, which has a body dotted with orange spots. Strategically situated in the southern section of the Cóndor Biosphere Reserve – which encompasses the Antisana Ecological Reserve, the Cayambe-Coca National Park and the Sumaco-Napo-Galeras National Park in north-central Ecuador – the Llanganates area is home to a legend that has not yet been forgotten: it is said, in fact, that the treasure of Atahualpa, the last Inca emperor, was buried here to prevent the Spanish conquistadors from finding it. Its true wealth, however, lies in its wealth of biodiversity, fostered by the presence within its boundaries of both Andean and Amazonian zones – and thus rainforests, moorlands and rivers. Along the trails, you can spot the tracks of the puma and see many species of hummingbird flitting about, especially near Llanganates Lagoon, which lies at an altitude of over 4,000 metres above sea level: it boasts tempting cobalt-blue waters and is fringed by cliffs.
