The decline in births in Italy continues in 2024. According to provisional Istat data for January-July, births are 4,600 fewer than in the same period in 2023. This was pointed out by the president of Istat Francesco Chelli speaking at the Stati generali della natalità at Palazzo Lombardia. "We will have another negative record again this year for the number of births in Italy," Chelli said. Even in 2023, the data show, with 379,000 children born, there will be a new downward overshoot of the denatality record. From 2008 to 2023, births decreased by almost 200,000 (-34%).

In detail, the decrease is attributable almost entirely to births to couples whose parents are both Italian (in 2023 there are 298,948; in 2008 there were 479,959; hence 181,081 fewer). Overall, it is mainly births within marriage that are decreasing (218,948 births in 2023 to married parents; there were 259,823 in 2020 and 463,102 in 2008).
