Inflation: Istat confirms it remained stable in June, up 3 per cent year-on-year
The year-on-year rate of change in ‘shopping basket’ prices has fallen (from +1.9% to +1.3%), as has core inflation (from +1.7% to +1.6%)
In June 2026, Istat explains, inflation fell to +3.0% (from +3.2% in May). This slight slowdown essentially reflects easing pressure on prices for unprocessed food, transport services, and recreational, cultural and personal care services. On the other hand, inflation was supported by a moderate rise in energy prices.
Shopping basket prices on the fall
The year-on-year rate of change in ‘shopping basket’ prices has fallen (from +1.9% to +1.3%), as has core inflation (from +1.7% to +1.6%). The inflation rate projected for June 2026 remains stable at +2.6%. The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) shows no change on a month-on-month basis and a year-on-year increase of +3.0% (down from +3.2% the previous month); the preliminary estimate was +3.1%.
The national consumer price index for blue-collar and white-collar households (FOI), excluding tobacco, shows no change on a month-on-month basis and a year-on-year increase of +2.9 per cent.
Food prices are slowing down
Both goods prices (from +3.4% to +3.3%) and services prices (from +2.8% to +2.6%) have slowed year-on-year. The differential between the services and goods sectors therefore remains negative, falling from -0.6 to -0.7 percentage points.
Prices for food, household and personal care products are also slowing (from +1.9% to +1.3%), as are those for frequently purchased goods (from +4.4% to +3.9%).
