The electricity bill of Italians is very high: 23% higher than the EU average in 2023. Eurostat surveys in EU countries show that in 2023 Italians spent on average more than EUR 960 on electricity bills alone. With consumption being equal, this means 23% more than the European average. The figure was calculated by Facile.it taking into consideration the consumption of a typical Italian family (2,700 kWh) and the electricity tariffs surveyed by Eurostat in the various EU countries.

Italy among the most expensive EU countries

In absolute values, this means that if the tariffs calculated as the average of European tariffs were to be applied in Italy, the total cost of electricity bills would be reduced by more than EUR 180 per year. Tariffs in the second half of 2023 in Europe. Taking a closer look at the electricity tariffs and limiting the analysis to the second half of last year, it emerges that among the 27 EU states, Italy was the sixth most expensive country, with an average tariff of €0.3347/kWh (including taxes and charges); the price drop observed in Italy compared to the first half of last year (-12%) was not enough to get out of the group of nations where electricity costs the most.

In Germany the most expensive bill

.

Few EU countries did worse. Leading the way was Germany, where private consumers spent 20% more on electricity than us. Then Ireland and Belgium (both +13%) and Denmark (+6%).

Where energy costs less

.

Longer, however, is the list of countries with a lower energy price than ours. Limiting ourselves to the main ones, we find that, for example, the average Italian tariff was 29% higher than in France, 43% higher than in Spain and even 53% higher than in Sweden. Not to mention Hungary; our tariffs were 196% higher than those in Hungary.

How much does the bill cost

.

Italy's performance, taking everything into consideration, is the fifth worst in Europe by 2023. Small consolation is the thought that the approximately 960 euro spent in our country becomes, consumption being equal, 1,100 euro in Germany and Belgium, just under 1,000 euro in Denmark, almost 970 in Cyprus. But there are those who spend less: in France, for example, annual expenditure was less than EUR 660, a saving of around EUR 300 compared to the Italian bill. Spanish and Swedish households spent less, budgeting around EUR 645, while in Greece the average bill stopped at EUR 627. The Portuguese got by with less than EUR 590, while Hungary confirmed itself as the cheapest EU country: last year around EUR 310 was enough to pay their electricity bills.
