Jeep to launch three SUVs by 2030. A ‘Made in China’ model based on the Dongfeng is on the way
The American brand’s future in Europe has been revealed. Wrangler set to bid farewell
Key points
Three new SUVs are set to arrive in Europe by 2030, including a large model built in China on a Dongfeng platform but with a design that, according to the manufacturer, is unmistakably its own. Having become one of Stellantis’s four pillars, as announced during Investor Day, Jeep has revealed what is set to arrive on the Old Continent in the coming years. How did it do so? Through an online conference where the European management team – all Italian – answered a series of questions from the specialist press, including *Il Sole 24 Ore*. Their answers outlined a range that will grow to six models by the end of the decade, starting with the all-electric Recon, expected to go on sale by the first half of 2027.
Jeep: two compact SUVs on the way
Fabio Catone, head of Jeep’s European division, presented a simple yet clear slide: two new B-segment SUVs due to be launched by 2030, named the B-SUV Compact and the B-SUV Large. These names hint at their positioning within the range, placing them on a different level to the Avenger. As confirmed by Fabio Carli, head of Jeep product marketing for Enlarged Europe, the new B-SUVs will be built on the new STLA One platform and will include full-hybrid and 4x4 versions. No precise details have been given as to where they will be produced, although Massimiliano Bogge, Head of Jeep Product Planning for Enlarged Europe, has hinted at the possibility of new factories in Europe.
Jeep D-SUV manufactured in China on the Dongfeng platform
Whilst the two compact SUVs were already on the cards, the unexpected news comes in the form of a new D-segment SUV – with an estimated length of around 4.80 metres – manufactured in China and built on the Dongfeng platform. As Catone pointed out, this will be a model with all specifications developed by Jeep, boasting a strong identity; above all, it will not be a rebadged Dongfeng model. Production will take place in China but the vehicle will be sold globally, although there are currently no plans to market it in the United States. The platform will form the basis for a multi-energy range, though no range-extender versions are currently planned.
Jeep Wrangler: goodbye or see you later?
The Jeep range will no longer include the Wrangler in its catalogue, in the sense that it will no longer be available to order. This is because, in response to our direct question about the Wrangler’s future, Fabio Catone was very clear: once current stock has run out, the Wrangler will no longer be available in Europe. For now, it’s a farewell, but they are continuing to work on securing a future for it, despite the emissions and safety requirements imposed by the European Union. If the Wrangler is set to be dropped from the range, the new Jeep Wrangler Scrambler – unveiled during Stellantis’ Investor Day – will not be added either. These decisions confirm Jeep’s positioning in the European market, with an increasing number of SUVs and fewer ‘hardcore’ off-roaders.
