Journey to Ancient Egypt with the "Treasures of the Pharaohs" at the Scuderie del Quirinale

In ten rooms of the Scuderie del Quirinale one travels back in time, more than 3000 centuries ago, on the banks of the Nile, with 130 masterpieces from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and the Museum of Luxor: "Treasures of the Pharaohs" is an exhibition event that tells the story of one of the oldest civilisations on earth. And it is the result of intense cultural diplomacy.
The idea of eternity
È l’idea di eternità che tiene insieme gli amuleti, le coppe, gli specchi, i vasi e gli scrigni canopi, i gioielli (strabiliante il collare di Psusennes I in oro, lapislazzuli e corniola), i sarcofagi dorati delle regine (come quello della misteriosa guerriera Ahhotep), le maschere (regale, in lamine d’oro, quella di Amenemope), i preziosi corredi funerari (di Yuya e Tuya, genitori della regina Tiye, sposa reale del faraone Amenofi III, c’è perfino il letto ligneo, con la rete in corde di lino). Celebrano l’immortalità anche le pregevoli coperture delle mummie, le ricche onorificenze militari, le stele funerarie, la tavola bronzea della mensa isiaca e i papiri con le formule magiche per attraversare il mondo invisibile e rinascere alla luce di Ra, il dio del sole.
The Finds of the City of Gold
I reperti della città d’oro - straordinaria scoperta del 2021 dell’ archeologo Zahi Hawass, ex ministro per le Antichità che cura, tra l’altro, il bellissimo catalogo - raccontano di botteghe e commerci sulla riva occidentale del Nilo, di insediamenti operai, di officine per la realizzazione di amuleti e la lavorazione di pellami, di laboratori di tessitura, cucina e ceramica. Da ogni manufatto (stampi, anelli, ruote da vasaio, anfore e poggiatesta) traspare la struttura della società, la vita di principi e principesse, di nobili e alti funzionari, ma anche di artigiani e servitori. Il potere, la devozione e il senso del dovere: in cima a tutti, il Faraone, autorità religiosa, politica, militare e amministrativa, con i suoi inesauribili talenti in medicina, astronomia, arte, architettura, letteratura e magia. Nel suo pantheon un numero infinito di divinità.
The fruit of cultural diplomacy
A powerful exhibition, also in its layout, that recounts the essence of the Nile civilisation with elements that together "constitute a cultural bridge," said Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli at the opening of the exhibition. "This exhibition is the result of a relationship between Italy and Egypt that has its roots in antiquity, that lives in a present of dynamic and fruitful cooperation, and that knows how to project itself into the future. The initiative is part of the cultural relations between Italy and Egypt and "dialogues with the objectives of the Mattei Plan for Africa," Giuli added.
"This Roman exhibition is much more than an exhibition, it is an opportunity for cooperation and an engaging invitation for the Italian people to discover Egypt's incredible archaeological heritage and its extraordinary diversity as a tourist destination," says Sherif Fathy, Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities.
