In the wake of a market demand that has already been privileging white and sparkling wines over still reds for some time now, even Lambrusco is giving itself "a coat of white". In the last few days, in fact, some modifications of the production regulations have been approved by the Consortium for the protection of Lambrusco, among which, in addition to the definition of some new sub-areas, the white typology is foreseen in the sparkling wine of Lambrusco di Sorbara Doc.
The novelty, therefore, concerns only one of the four Lambrusco Docs, even if one of the most important ones from the point of view of volumes.
"As of today," say the Consortium for the Protection of Lambrusco, "Lambrusco di Sorbara Doc can also be offered in white in the Spumante version. An addition that represents the natural conclusion of a path started by the producers, who had already been making this type of product for several years, with excellent responses from consumers and insiders". Except that the pioneers who had launched into the white version could only label it with fancy names and in the absence of the amendment to the specifications they could not state 'Lambrusco di Sorbara Doc' on the label. With the modification of the specification, however, it becomes possible.
Lambrusco in a white sparkling wine version is not the only novelty that has been introduced by the Consortium.
"Among these," explain the Consortium, "is the introduction of the sub-zone Monte Barello within the denomination Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro Doc for the production of sparkling wines. The sub-zone comprises an area located in the predominantly hilly zone that embraces the village of Castelvetro and will have to meet specific requirements, including a lower yield per hectare, hand-harvesting of the grapes and the use of pure Lambrusco Grasparossa'.
Important updates have also been made to the Reggiano DOC specifications, with a change that does not specifically concern Lambrusco but aims to give prominence to another variety that is very typical and representative of the area. In fact, the "Fogarina" type has been introduced and the Gualtieri geographical unit added.
"We are happy to be able to close the year 2024 with the updating of our specifications," commented the president of the Consorzio di tutela Lambrusco, Claudio Biondi. "This is a path that has been underway for several years to respond to the needs of the territory in order to ensure that the specifications increasingly enhance the quality and peculiarities of our excellent products.
