Google employees' letter to the ceo: government does not use Ai for military purposes
More than 560 employees of Alphabet's subsidiary write to Sundar Pichai: 'Artificial intelligence benefits humanity'
More than 560 Google employees signed an open letter to the CEO Sundar Pichai urging him to refuse to allow the US government to use its artificial intelligence technology for classified military operations. "We want Ai to benefit humanity, rather than being used in inhumane or extremely harmful ways. This includes lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance, but it extends beyond that,' they wrote.
"The only way to ensure that Google is not associated with this is to reject any classified workload," the missive highlights. Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has joined the growing list of tech companies that have signed an agreement with the US Department of Defence to use its artificial intelligence models in classified activities. The agreement allows the Pentagon to use Google's Ai for "any legitimate governmental purpose", as is the case with OpenAI and xAI of , Elon Musk.
Confidential networks are used to manage a wide range of sensitive activities, including mission planning and weapons targeting. In 2025, the Pentagon signed agreements worth up to $200 million each with leading artificial intelligence labs, including Anthropic, OpenAI and Google itself. The Trump administration had lobbied the major Ai companies to make their tools available on restricted networks without the standard restrictions they apply to users.
