Lexus RZ, the electric suv raises the bar: more power, over 560 km range. Steer-by-wire system makes its debut
New features include a larger battery, increased power levels and, above all, the debut of the new steer-by-wire steering system
More powerful, more efficient and even more technological. The restyling of the Lexus RZ comes with a package of substantial updates that aim to strengthen the electric SUV's position in the premium segment. New features include a larger battery, increased power levels and, above all, the all-new steer-by-wire steering system. Orders are already open and the promotional launch price starts at around EUR 50,000, net of offers.
Track test in Vairano
We drove the sportiest version, the F-Sport, on the Vairano circuit, where the Japanese SUV displayed surprising dynamic behaviour. Despite the typical ground clearance for its class, the new RZ effectively limits roll and pitch, offering a stable and precise ride.
Merit also goes to a further stiffened structure and a refined suspension compartment: MacPherson layout at the front and double wishbones at the rear, with new spring and damper settings designed to strike the right balance between comfort and sportiness.
Sterzo of the future: no more mechanical connection
The real revolution, however, is steer-by-wire, a system that eliminates the traditional mechanical connection between the steering wheel and front wheels. Driver inputs are transmitted electronically via torque and control actuators. The result? Direct steering, with variable gearing according to speed.
On the track between the pins, the precision in corner entry is such that it is reminiscent of a vehicle with a steered rear axle. The motorsport-inspired cloche steering wheel may not be aesthetically pleasing, but it contributes to a feeling of total control of the vehicle: the hands remain in position at all times, with quicker movements, less fatigue and greater responsiveness even in emergency manoeuvres.
