"The maternal and infant mortality rate in Italy is encouraging and testifies to the presence of a widespread healthcare system capable of guaranteeing high quality care and support to expectant mothers and newborns. The growing denatality that afflicts our country nevertheless requires a constant and targeted commitment to ensure the continuity and quality of services, for the benefit of all generations, in adherence to the universalistic nature of our healthcare system'. This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message on the occasion of World Health Day.
The Head of State stressed that "the right to health is an achievement of our civilisation, the result of decades of civil commitment and popular mobilisation, social reforms and scientific advances. The recent pandemic experience has highlighted how vulnerable global health is and how crucial it is to invest in robust health systems, ready to face emergencies'.
"The theme chosen by the World Health Organisation," the Head of State continued, "to mark today invites us to focus on the health of mothers and newborns: 'A healthy start, a future full of hope'. Improving access to prenatal care, training qualified health workers and ensuring efficient infrastructures for newborns means promoting a virtuous cycle by enabling children to grow up in a prosperous and dynamic society. Protecting the right to health from birth is a prerequisite for ensuring a future for all citizens, recognising that the well-being of each individual contributes to the vitality of the community'.
