Mattarella, task of the Republic to consolidate trust between institutions and citizens

"Consolidating the architecture of trust between institutions and citizens, reviving in each the most authentic sense of democratic participation, is a persistent task in the life of the Republic". This was written by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message to the Prefects of Italy, on the occasion of the anniversary of Republic Day. 'The values of the Constitution live on in the action of those who place themselves at the service of the community,' he further emphasises.

"The Republic - recalls the President of the Republic - was born from a choral and sincere exercise of democracy. The protagonist was the Italian people, who flocked with extraordinary participation and composure to the polling stations to choose the order of the State and elect the Constituent Assembly. The protagonists were, in particular, the women, who were called to the polls for the first time in the history of Italia, for the administrative elections that year and for the consultations on 2 June

"On that occasion," Mattarella continued, "in a delicate moment of transition, the free exercise of the vote was once again guaranteed, restoring after years - with the industrious contribution of the Prefectures and other institutions - the functioning of the complex electoral machine. The national community, in commemorating those founding moments today, renews its convinced adhesion to the republican ideals, projected onto the European horizon. It does so by recalling the faces and the civic passion of so many citizens, of so many women and men of the institutions, who generously, in eighty years of the Republic's life, in the most diverse roles and circumstances, have contributed to its development, devoting themselves to the common good, sometimes to the point of heroism and the sacrifice of their own lives".
