Prime Minister Meloni's lightning mission to Baku to speak at Cop29, the UN climate conference that opened in the Azerbaijani capital. More than nine hours of flying time and 10,000 kilometres travelled between last night and this morning by the prime minister in order not to miss the high-level session of the UN summit on the future of the planet, during which she reiterated that a 'pragmatic and non-ideological approach is needed for a sustainable energy transition' and that 'technological neutrality' must be pursued by using all available solutions, including 'nuclear fusion'.

The PM: a pragmatic, not ideological approach is needed on climate

'Italy,' Meloni emphasised in her speech, 'wants to continue to play its part' on climate but to 'protect the environment' we do not need 'an approach that is too ideological and not pragmatic or we will be far from the road to success. We need a balanced energy mix to facilitate the transition process. We need to use all available technologies,' the PM said.

"Also nuclear fusion to bridge the transition"

.

'At the moment,' Meloni recalled, 'there is no alternative to fossil fuels, we must have a realistic vision. We need a balance and a transition process, we need to use all the energies at our disposal, not only renewables, also biofuels and nuclear fusion,' which 'could make a difference'. Italy, said the premier, is 'at the forefront of nuclear fusion. As part of our G7 presidency, we organised the first meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group, promoted by the International Atomic Energy Agency. We intend to relaunch this technology that could be a game-changer, as it can transform energy from a geopolitical weapon to a widely accessible resource'.

Pope at Cop29, situation does not allow for further delays

"The scientific data at our disposal does not allow for any further delay and makes it clear that the preservation of creation is one of the most urgent issues of our time. We must also recognise that it is closely linked to the preservation of peace". These are the words of the Pope in a message to Cop29, delivered by the Vatican Secretary of State, Card. Pietro Parolin, present in Baku. "We should act and live as members of one family inhabiting the same interconnected global village," is the Pope's appeal.
