Meloni with European leaders disengages from Trump: 'It is only up to Denmark and Greenland to decide on their territories'
The joint declaration signed with Macron, Merz, Tusk, Sanchez, Starmer and Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen
Key points
Never before has Giorgia Meloni had to come to terms with reality. The threats of Donald Trump on the annexation of Greenland to the US are an event horizon for the Italian premier, until now the most trusted bridger between the two sides of the ocean. But justifying them is not possible. On the eve of the meeting of the Willing scheduled for today in Paris - on the table above all Ukraine - Meloni therefore signs a joint declaration with the other European leaders in support of her Danish counterpart,Mette Frederiksen.
The text of the joint declaration
The text, with which Meloni also distances herself from the US president's positions, is signed together with the French Emmanuel Macron, the German Friedrich Merz, the Polish Donald Tusk, the Spanish Pedro Sanchez, the British Keir Starmer and, of course, Frederiksen. 'Security in the Arctic,' began the statement, 'remains a key priority for Europe and is crucial for international and transatlantic security. NATO has made it clear that the Arctic region is a priority and European allies are stepping up their efforts. We and many other allies have increased our presence, activities and investments to keep the Arctic safe and to deter adversaries. The Kingdom of Denmark - including Greenland - is part of NATO.
"Inviolable borders, only Denmark and Greenland can decide"
The leaders continued with an implicit reminder to Trump: 'Security in the Arctic must therefore be achieved collectively, in cooperation with NATO allies, including the United States, respecting the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders. These are universal principles and we will not stop defending them. The United States is an essential partner in this endeavour, as an ally of NATO and through the 1951 defence agreement between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States. Greenland belongs to its people. It is up to Denmark and Greenland, and only to them, to decide on matters that concern Denmark and Greenland'.
The Summit in France
The Sherpas were at work all day yesterday: in the front row for Italy, Meloni's diplomatic advisor, Fabrizio Saggio. The summit is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m. The 37 representatives of the so-called Volenterosi, starting with the Europeans, will flock to the French capital. There will also be Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa for the EU and Mark Rutte for NATO. For the US, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine Steve Witcoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner were present.
Ukraine and the troop node
On the ongoing war between Kiev and Moscow - even tonight the Russians launched a massive attack with Shahed and Gerbera attack drones and other types, according to reports by Rbc Ukraine - on the agenda are the security guarantees to be offered to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. The mechanism under discussion is the one borrowed from NATO Article 5, as proposed by Italy since the first meetings, but both the time duration of the shield and the physiognomy of the eventual multinational force to be deployed in the field for further protection must be decided. Meloni has already made it clear that Italy will not send soldiers.
