Meloni hears Macron: joint commitment for Gulf countries. US bases and air defence: OK for majority resolution
PM rules out going to war, but majority prepares resolution to strengthen defence and support European allies against Iranian threats

The President of the Council, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation with the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders discussed the implications of the Iran conflict both on the regional Middle East picture and globally, focusing in particular on the impact of the hostilities on freedom of navigation.
Furthermore, a common commitment was reaffirmed to support the Gulf nations affected by the unjustifiable Iranian attacks and the security of Cyprus and to avoid military escalation in Lebanon. The two leaders agreed to keep in close contact on the development of the crisis.
Majority Resolution
The government's strategy in the face of the military escalation in the Middle East has been gathered in the majority resolution approved in the House with 179 votes in favour, 100 against and 14 abstentions. A text that commits the government "to participate" in the "joint effort within the EU to support, in case of request, EU member states in the defence of their territory from missile or drone attacks by Iran" and to "confirm the respect, in the use of military installations on national territory and granted to US forces, of the legal framework defined by the international agreements in force".
The resolution also speaks of the "deployment and redeployment of air and missile defence and surveillance systems, within the perimeter of what is authorised in the geographical area of intervention, to protect Italian citizens, to support partner countries in the Gulf area and to safeguard strategic infrastructure in the area, to protect primary national interests".
Premier: prevent speculation on energy and food
"There is also the issue of the economic consequences for Italia, we must prevent speculation from making energy and food prices explode," according to the premier, speaking on RTL 102.5. "In general," she explained, "I am concerned in the meantime by an increasingly evident crisis of international law, of multilateral bodies, which is generating a world increasingly governed by chaos.
