Meta said it has banned Rt, Rossiya Segodnya and other Russian state media networks from its platforms. "After careful consideration, we have expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media: Rossiya Segodnya, Rt and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity," the company that owns Facebook and Instagram said in a statement today.
The ban marks a major escalation in the actions of the world's largest social media company against Russian state media, after spending years taking more limited measures, such as blocking the publication of advertisements and reducing the reach of their posts.
The enforcement of the ban will take place in the coming days. In addition to Facebook, Meta's apps include Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads.
Meta's move came after the US filed money laundering charges earlier this month against two RT employees for what officials said was a plan to hire an American company to produce online content to influence the 2024 elections.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that countries should treat the activities of the Russian state broadcaster Rt as if they were secret intelligence operations.
