NEW DELHI - In a move aimed at decapitating Iran's atomic programme, even at the risk of triggering a regional conflict with potentially catastrophic consequences, the United States intervened alongside Israel overnight, "completely destroying" three Iranian nuclear sites. This was announced by President Donald Trump, who spoke of a 'spectacularly successful military operation'.

For the time being, it is unclear whether the US will continue to attack Iran or whether this was an isolated operation. According to Cbs News, Washington has reportedly activated its diplomatic channels with Tehran to explain that the fall of the regime is not among its goals. But Trump himself has warned Iran that any retaliation against the US will be met with further attacks. "There will be peace or for Iran it will be a tragedy. A tragedy far greater than what we have witnessed over the last eight days," Trump said during a three-minute speech from the White House. "If peace does not come soon, we will strike other targets with precision, speed and competence."

A channel affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards announced that 'the United States will have to bear the consequences of the attack on Iran. Their bases in the Middle East will be reduced to ashes'.

Sirens sounded in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem this morning warning of an imminent air attack. A missile hit a residential area in the heart of Tel Aviv, causing severe damage to several buildings and the collapse of several apartment blocks. Haifa was hit before part of the civilian population was able to hide in shelters. Damage was also reported in other cities in central and northern Israel. For the time being, there are around 30 missiles fired and 86 injured, 77 of whom are 'in good condition'.

The Israeli response was immediate. An Armed Forces spokesman reported that Air Force (Iaf) fighter jets are carrying out a new series of bombing raids in the western regions of Iran.

The impact of attacks on nuclear sites

.

Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation confirmed that there had been attacks on the Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz sites, but insisted that its work would not stop. Iranian state media quoted the National Nuclear Safety System Center as saying that its detectors had not recorded any radioactive releases. Previous Israeli attacks on the Natanz site had caused contamination only inside the facility.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Sunday that there had been "no increase in off-site radiation levels" since the US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites. The UN nuclear agency released the message via Platform X on Sunday. "The IAEA can confirm that no increase in off-site radiation levels has been reported at this time," the note read.

According to Iranian state TV, the three sites had long since been evacuated and secured. The stockpiles of enriched uranium were reportedly transferred from the nuclear centres and no material remained that could have caused radiation if struck. Natanz and Fordow are sites for uranium enrichment, while Isfahan specialises in ore conversion, a process that precedes enrichment.

B-2 stealth bombers deployed

.

The US entry into the conflict comes after more than a week of Israeli attacks aimed at dismantling Iranian air defences, offensive missile capabilities and damaging uranium enrichment facilities.

According to Fox News reports, in order to hit the underground site at Fordow, US B-2 stealth bombers used six Gbu-57 Mop (Massive ordnance penetrator) bombs, a special type of device weighing over 13 tonnes that is the most powerful conventional weapon in the US arsenal, designed specifically to destroy fortified underground bunkers. Due to its imposing size - it is 6.25 metres long - the B-2 bomber can only carry one or two Mops per mission. According to the US Armed Forces, the bomb can penetrate over 60 metres of reinforced concrete, making it effective against the most heavily protected underground structures in the world.

Against the Natanz and Isfahan sites, 30 Tomahawk missiles fired from US submarines at a distance of about 400 miles from the two targets were allegedly used.

Iran, Trump: "Europa non d'aiuto, difficile fermare Netanyahu"

The reactions

.

Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, condemned the US bombing of nuclear sites, calling it 'outrageous, illegal and criminal' and said his country has the right to defend its sovereignty. "What happened this morning will have eternal consequences," he wrote on X. "In accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions allowing for a legitimate self-defence response, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, its interests and its people," the minister added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump's decision in a video message. "Your courageous decision to strike Iran's nuclear facilities will change history," Netanyahu said, adding that the US "did what no other country in the world could have done."

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, said he was "deeply alarmed" by the "dangerous escalation" of US attacks. "There is a growing risk that this conflict could quickly spiral out of control, with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region and the entire world," he said.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned on Wednesday that direct attacks on the Islamic Republic will cause "irreparable damage" to the United States. And Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said that "any American intervention will be a recipe for all-out war in the region".

The possible consequences for the oil market

.

According to the Russian news agency Tass, the Supreme Political Council of the Houthi, the Yemeni rebels, announced attacks against US forces in the Red Sea in response to the US raids. The Houthis have also promised that they will 'widen the scope of the conflict'.

In recent days, the leadership of the pro-Iranian militia had announced that if the Trump administration continued to support Israel militarily, attacks against American ships transiting the Red Sea would resume. The Houthis had suspended such attacks in May, based on an agreement with Washington.

A naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would have the effect of driving up oil prices, which already soared by 11 per cent last week due to tensions in the region.
