In the course of its operational campaign in the Indo-Pacific, which started on 1 June, the Italian Carrier Strike Group continues to put important pieces in place during its deployment, giving further evidence of its 'international by design' structure. In the Pacific Ocean, the first bilateral Multi-Large-Deck Event with a US Navy Carrier Group took place. On one side the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and on the other side the Cavour Carrier Strike Group with their respective escort units, destroyers USS Spruance (DDG 111) and USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. (DDG 121), the Italian Frigate Alpino (F 594), and their respective aircraft groups embarked with 4th and 5th generation aircraft.

"This was a great opportunity to operate with our close ally, Italy, in the Indo-Pacific. Our efforts are critical to ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region," said Rear Admiral Adan Cruz, commander of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) Three, "Interoperability does not just happen, it is practised and rehearsed by all our teams to build the relationships and connections necessary to conduct a successful MLDE."

"The activity at sea with CSG Three represented a further opportunity to train us in Multi Carrier Generations operations, demonstrating the now established interoperability and the inherent ability of our navies to work together," said Rear Admiral Ciappina, commander of the Italian Carrier Strike Group.

"Conducting this type of activity is one of the strategic objectives of our operational deployments," agreed the commanders of the two CSGs, "the crews worked with professional commitment, ensuring effective and fruitful cooperation.

Towards Japan

The Italian Carrier Strike Group, deployed for the first time in the Indo-Pacific, had already interacted with the US Navy's CSG 'Ike' Eisenhower on 7 June, immediately after crossing the Suez Canal. The units of the Italian CSG are currently docked at the US Navy Naval Base in Guam for a short logistical stop before proceeding to Japan.

The meaning of the mission

Sending the Cgs Cavour takes on very specific meanings. Italy is one of the very few countries (along with only the USA, UK and, shortly, Japan) that can embark on fifth-generation fighters (the F-35B, those in short take-off and vertical landing configuration, Stovl), and will deploy this capability for the first time during this mission.
